Why Character Matters?

"Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23).

During a recent discussion with friends about the Bible's teachings on character and its impact on our lives, I pondered ways to assess a person's true character through Christ's agricultural analogies. Our devotional reading in Proverbs 4:23 shows how character, our core inner being, shapes our actions and influences our lives.

Jesus teaches the significance of evaluating people by their fruit, which refers to their character and actions. He says, "By their fruit you will recognize them... A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit." Christ is teaching us about the quality of a person's character and how it is discerned by observing their behavior and impact on others. In his letter to the Galatians, the apostle Paul also makes character a visible reality of spiritual growth.

In Galatians 5:22-23, he describes the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
These qualities reflect a strong character shaped by the Holy Spirit's work in a believer's life. God tells Samuel, "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart"(In 1 Samuel 16:7). God values a person's inner qualities and character more than their external charm or attributes.

In the end, believers in Christ stand to gain personally by seeking out and associating with individuals who embody strong character traits. These individuals are likelier to align with biblical values and contribute positively to their lives.

By prioritizing inner qualities such as humility, integrity, and love, you can create a supportive circle that inspires and encourages your spiritual growth and helps you reflect Christ's character in your life.
