"Then God made a man out of dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7, NIV).
Studying the uniqueness of the human soul as God's masterful creation is fascinating. I sometimes can't comprehend its complexity. The more I study the soul in the Bible and research how ancient philosophers thought about it, the more I sense its mysterious nature and long walk into God's heart.
The human soul is not just a fascinating subject; it is the essence of our connection with God, interactions with others, and purpose in life. It is a part of us that captivates scholars, thinkers, and everyday people alike, a thread that separates yet closely links us to our physical bodies, and to each other.
According to the Bible, God creates the soul in His image, infusing it with His breath (Neshama in Hebrew), granting us life and the ability to reason (Genesis 2:7). Our souls yearn for a connection with God beyond mere physical existence.
The Psalms express this desire for divine connection as the soul thirsts for God (Psalm 42:1). Additionally, God commands us to love others as we love ourselves (Leviticus 19:18), indicating the value of building deep relationships and leading a life that reflects God's love for us and our love for others.
Our mission as souls is not just a passive existence, but an active engagement with the world through Christ's gospel message of God's Kingdom. It encompasses worship, stewardship, and righteousness. Through worship, we honor and acknowledge our Creator. As mentioned in Genesis 2:15, caring for the earth means more than just caring for the environment; it means caring for our communities. Pursuing righteousness means more than just seeking justice. It means showing mercy and walking humbly with God (Micah 6:8), embodying God's love and goodness in all that we do.
The Bible's teachings on the soul deeply propel understanding of our existence. It portrays the soul as a divine breath that connects the earthly with the heavenly, seeking to know God, connect with others, and fulfill its earthly mission through worship, stewardship, and righteousness.
The soul acts as a link, connecting the temporary with the eternal, the individual with the community, and the mortal with the divine. Understanding the soul's essence can help you lead your life on earth and follow your heavenly calling with faith, hope, and love, just as Christ did.
